Acid Reflux and GERD and your tongue? Why do you need to know?

Acid reflux and GERD can be made worse if your tongue doesn’t work right. The tongue is a pretty interesting muscle.

For one thing, For one thing, it’s one of the few muscles that only is attached at one end. For another, it interacts with your airway and your food way. The two shouldn’t meet, but sometimes they do.

Imagine you’re lying on your back, and your tongue falls backward and kind of closes off your throat. As you’re trying to breathe through your nose you’re creating a suction that pulls stomach acids up and up!

Sometimes it goes up and down in the esophagus and puts you at risk for Barrett’s Syndrome and esophageal cancer.

Sometimes the acids from GERD will make it up into your mouth. You may taste it in your sleep, or maybe not. If it wakes you up, take a calcium based antacid immediately to buffer the acid to save your teeth.

If you don’t notice it, your dentist will because your molars will need to be repaired. Also, the teeth in front of your molars will need to be repaired. You’ll be scolded for not flossing or using enough fluoride but it won’t matter, the problem is coming from your tongue.

Sometimes the acids from acid reflux can make it all the way to your sinuses! Consequently, you guessed it, sinus infection after sinus infection.

You won’t know why, while you may have surgery also you may be taking all kinds of medications and it’s all due to your tongue causing a suction delivering your stomach acids to far off lands.
